We needed some sun, beach, and ocean! After all, we were in Southeast Asia. The only places we had been traveling to were cities, towns, and jungles. We decided to head to Nha Trang since we heard it was the hot-spot beach town of Vietnam.
We booked our stay at the oceanfront Sheraton Hotel. They had a rooftop pool and a couple of top-notch restaurants. The rooms had the most comfortable beds and pillows. It was a nice treat since we were coming from an Elephant Sanctuary in Laos.
Nha Trang is boosted for its beaches and is a vacation hotspot by various publications and websites. But we were very disappointed; the beaches are a bit dirty. There were a lot of motorbikes buzzing around, which could be heard from our hotel room. Also, the water wasn’t the crystal blue waters we would see in other Southeast Asia countries.
The pool at our hotel was bluer than the ocean. We ended up hanging out at the hotel pool most of our time in Nha Trang.
We were a bit relieved to be staying at the Sheraton Hotel!
Eventually, we ventured off to explore and found some beach bars. One of the best, in my opinion, was the Sailing Club. It was huge, with lots of seating, and it had a big in-ground pool. The menu had a large selection of Vietnamese and Western dishes. By the looks of other patron’s food, they weren’t anything fancy but looked delicious. The beers came in big mugs and were thirst quenching! We ended up, drinking and chilling here for the rest of the day.
There are a couple of other beach bars next to the Sailing Club, but we liked this one a lot better because of the chill atmosphere. It is right on the beach and you can people watch, drink, and munch on some appetizers while enjoying the sun. Also, it was a lot cleaner.
One night we wanted to eat some fish, after hearing that Nha Trang is known for their seafood. We drove up north of the Tran Phu Bridge to all the seafood restaurants.
We ate at Nhà hàng Yến Sào Khánh Hòa, a recommendation from our hotel. It was a place many locals ate, so we were excited to go. We got to the restaurant around 9pm-ish, it was a bit empty for a huge place. We ordered some food, as best as we could, but it was hard since everything on the menu was in Vietnamese. We used a lot of hand motions and simple English to order our dishes. Also, the pictures on the menu were a lifesaver!
I have to admit; the food was just ok. I’ve had much better seafood in the States and other places around the world. Maybe it was our lack of knowing Vietnamese seafood dishes or maybe how it was prepared, who knows, but we definitely were not impressed at all.
It was cool to relax, get some sun, and fresh ocean air, but I wouldn’t go back to Nha Trang. It wasn’t worth it for me. There are so many other beautiful cities in Vietnam as well as Southeast Asia.
